Our company history begins over fifty years ago, when Muskoka was a very different place than it is today.
Brian Hoar, our founder, built a summer cottage for himself and his wife, Valda, on Lake Muskoka’s Eilean Gowan Island while he was working as an Engineering Manager at Eagle Precision. Brian’s carpentry skills caught the attention of many of their neighbours on the lake, and over the following summers, Brian completed several building projects and established a roster of satisfied clients. Eventually, he and Valda made the decision to move to Muskoka full-time and start a family business.
From those early days, Brian and Valda worked as a team, with Valda keeping the books and ferrying building supplies to Brian’s job sites by boat. Brian’s work remained his calling card, and with little to no advertising he and Valda built a successful cottage construction business through repeat customers and word-of-mouth referrals.
Josh Pearcey joined Brian Hoar Inc. when he was still a student in 1997 and in 2010 came on board as Brian’s business partner. Born-and-bred Muskokans, Josh and his wife, Emily, continue to operate Brian Hoar Inc. in the tradition of Brian and Valda, with Josh operating as director and project manager and Emily fulfilling the duties of administrator for the company. Josh is deeply involved with each project and personally communicates with clients, often on a daily basis, to provide updates, answer questions, and arrange details. Josh also has a working manager on every job site whose sole focus is on that individual project and with whom Josh liaises daily. Brian remains active in client relations to the delight of our many repeat clients.
